A Personal Reflection

In my 20s, I went through a period where OCD controlled so much of my daily life that even leaving the house felt impossible unless everything was perfectly in order. My CDs had to be arranged alphabetically. My clothes hung on designated hangers, perfectly color-coordinated. My cupboards were meticulously organized by size. And if things weren’t just so, I’d spiral into hours of cleaning, organizing, and counting—like brushing my hair exactly 100 times or scrubbing the same surface repeatedly.

I didn’t know what exposure therapy was at the time, but something inside me knew I couldn’t keep living that way. So I decided to make a change, starting small. I began by intentionally doing things that made me deeply uncomfortable. I’d leave a CD out of place, move items around in the cupboard, or brush my hair only 50 times instead of 100.

Each time, the discomfort was almost unbearable. My heart would race, and my mind would scream at me to fix it. But I sat with the discomfort, refusing to give in. Slowly, these small acts of defiance chipped away at the grip OCD had on my life. Over time, the things that used to feel impossible started to lose their power.

It was only years later that I learned this process had a name: exposure therapy. But back then, I just knew that leaning into discomfort was my only path forward. It wasn’t easy, and it wasn’t quick, but it taught me one of the most important lessons of my life: growth doesn’t come from staying comfortable. It comes from facing the things that scare us, no matter how small those steps might seem.
